About our Kindred’s Emblem
The Idavoll Kindred’s beautiful coat of arms was created by our master craftsman and Steersman þórgrímr. It contains symbols that our lore teaches us are sacred to our chief Gods: The Hammer, of course, is the symbol of the God of Thunder and the protector of all mankind in this world. The two ravens symbolize the presence of the Allfather, and his deep wisdom, looking down and seeing all things that occur. The boar’s heads that crown the hammer symbolize the protective and life-enhancing power of the God Frey and his sister, the Goddess Freya, who rule over the peace and prosperity of all human communities, especially Kindred of Asatru.
The hammer is red because the Thunder-God was associated with this powerful color- it represents the massive might of his strength and his fertilizing power, as well as the red beard with which he was depicted in our ancestor’s holy stories. The word “IDAVOLL” appears written in the Runes of the Elder Futhark on the head of the hammer itself.
The field behind the hammer is divided white and gold- white is for the light of the sky, and the gold field has two meanings: first, it symbolizes a field full of golden grain, which receives from above the rain and lightning of the thunder God needed for its fertility. The golden field of wheat calls to mind the Goddess Sif of the Golden Hair, the grain-Goddess who was wife to the Thunder God.
Secondly, the gold field represents the eternal “Shining Plain” of Idavoll, where the Gods themselves assemble to craft, to fellowship, and to remember. The color scheme is dominated by the colors white, red, and black, which were the most sacred colors to the Indo-European peoples, and symbolically given over to the Norns, the great Fates who weave the lives and destinies of all beings, human or otherwise.
The gold and white behind the hammer also call to mind the light of the sun and the light of the moon- the two great powers in the heavens that give light to man.
